David Vladeck, former Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and EPIC Advisor, discussed consumer protection, antitrust, and privacy at Berkeley Law School’s Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice. Mr. Vladek focused on why consumer protection and privacy is in “dire trouble.” He explains that data security is no longer valued – mainly because there are no serious consequences to companies that have significant data breaches or outright violate consumer privacy. As a result, identity theft is incredibly pervasive. Vladeck goes on to discuss the growing data brokering industry and Facebook’s targeting advertising platform.
