Rod Beckstrom discusses Privacy, AI, and Data Collection in Davos

Rod Beckstrom, former CEO of ICANN and EPIC Advisor, attended the World Economic Forum in Davos this past January and participated in a panel focused on privacy, Artificial Intelligence, and data collection. The discussion quickly turned to Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Since its passage, there’s been sharp division between the tech industry and privacy advocates regarding  provisions in the GDPR. Those in tech see the law as stifling innovation, while most privacy advocates see it as a good start.

During the panel, Mr. Beckstrom said Europe went “astray” when it adopted the GDPR and suggested another solution for the United States: adding a privacy-specific amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
