Michael Kirby on the Value of People’s Tribunals

Michael Kirby, Former Justice, High Court of Australia and EPIC Advisor, published Peoples’ Tribunals and International Law last year. Kirby shows how civil society tribunals develop international law. The book examines tribunals in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, in addition to the experiences of activists and advocates in this area of study. As Kirby explains, the true value of people’s tribunals come in countries where the people cannot rely on their governments. In many cases, it may be the government committing atrocities, thus leaving communities without a place to turn to for justice. But the tribunal offers the incredibly empowering opportunity to be heard. “They cannot get action, but they have not lost the dignity of their voice.” Kirby said. Listen to a short talk about the book below.
