Who would have thought that an algorithm used to improve public school bus schedules would draw out issues of fairness, highlight a need for unbiased policy, and show just how important it is to understand and balance competing human interests. Joi Ito, Director of MIT’s Media Lab and EPIC Advisor, illustrates in a piece written for WIRED that a problem Artificial Intelligence easily solved, ended up exposing issues of privilege and showing the value of algorithmic transparency.
In the article Ito points out that, “Technology is amplifying complexity and our ability to change society, altering the dynamics and difficulty of consensus and governance.
