Professor Jerry Kang on Implicit Bias

Jerry Kang, UCLA’s Diversity and Inclusion Chancellor and EPIC Advisor, has focused on the nexus between implicit bias and the law, with the goal of advancing a “behavioral realism” in legal analysis. Through out his career, Professor Kang collaborated with leading experimental social psychologists on wide-ranging scholarly, educational, and advocacy projects. In addition to this, Professor Kang lectures broadly to lawyers, judges, government agencies, and corporations about implicit bias and what we can do to change it. You can see his video series on implicit bias here.

Professor Kang’s research on implicit bias demonstrates why EPIC continues to advocate for algorithmic transparency in AI. EPIC’s most recent complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against HireVue and Airbnb warn that AI scoring in hiring and for housing could negatively impact marginalized communities.
