Barbara Simons on Election Security Threats

Barbara Simons, co-author of Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count and EPIC Advisor, gave a talk on “Election Security: Threats and Solutions” to the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) on December 2, 2018. The CSSP is an organization of science and engineering research disciplines through member societies and federations. CSSP member societies are represented by their presidents, president-elects, and recent past presidents of leading scientific societies and federations.  Simons is a former President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). In addition to this achievement, she also has the distinction of being the only woman to have received the Engineering Alumni Award from the College of Engineering of U.C. Berkeley, where she earned her Ph.D. in computer science.

Election security has only been a hot topic of discussion since the 2016 elections. But for experts like Simons, securing elections has been a main area of focus for a number of years. She has emphasized that voting should never be over the internet and has cautioned about the use of blockchain voting.  Click below to listen to a recent interview where Simons discusses election security and discusses her book.  Click here to listen to Barbara Simons on Election Security.
