Colin Bennett Organizing Conference on Data-Driven Elections

Colin Bennett, Political Science Professor at the University of Victoria and EPIC Advisor, is organizing a conference with Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia on “Data-Driven Elections.” The conference will be held April 29-30, 2019 at the University of Victoria.

According to Bennett, “the emergence of big data analytics has enabled organizations to target consumers in an increasingly granular manner, so the same techniques are being used to influence voters.”  He goes on to explain that, “Delivering the right message, at the right time, to targeted voters has the potential to shift the fate of the modern election campaign and to influence electoral outcomes.”

Day one of the conference will be geared toward experts and small group discussion, while day two will be open to the public. There is also a call for papers — Proposals for paper presentations (a one-page abstract) should be submitted to Colin Bennett (cjb@uvic.ca) and David Lyon (lyond@queensu.ca) by November 16th, 2018.
