EPIC Advisor Helen Nissenbaum was interviewed for the Harvard Business Review. During the interview she discussed the importance of privacy and challenged the way we think about consent. “Stop Thinking About Consent: It Isn’t Possible and It Isn’t Right” centers on the notion that when users consent to use of their personal information, it often isn’t clearly understood what they are consenting to. Nissenbaum uses a ZIP code to illustrate her point. “Think of it this way. If I ask you for your ZIP code, and you agree to give it to me, what have you consented to?” She said. While it seems harmless, Nissenbaum explains that agreeing to share your ZIP code with one party, did not mean you agreed to targeted marketing – which often happens.
