EPIC Advisor and member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) Prof. Ed Felten sat down with Slate to discuss election security. Felten has done extensive work assessing voting machine vulnerabilities. Although outdated software and old machines are primarily the problem, the more insidious issues come when voters begin to doubt the entire process.
“Well, it’s the same worry that we’ve had in past election cycles, unfortunately.” Felten said, “It’s partly what happens if somebody tries to manipulate the systems and change the result of the election. But, as in 2016, there’s probably greater concern about the possibility that someone will try to undermine confidence in the election to try to undermine the legitimacy of the process by trying to cast doubt on the result.” Click here and listen to the entire interview.
