Twenty Years of the Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPPA)

EPIC President Marc Rotenberg spoke during a luncheon hosted by Senator Ed Markey celebrating 20 years of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) today. Sen. Markey referred to Rotenberg and the other speakers as the “Online Justice League” since many of them offered expertise and guidance which helped with passage of the legislation. “Kids have a right to develop and the right to make mistakes.” Markey said, emphasizing that new online threats to children are “vast.”  Rotenberg pointed out that COPPA was a bipartisan effort and one of the best examples that privacy law can be passed in the United States.
